a'o mai, ho'ike, 'a'o aku - learn, guide, teach

These words resonated deeply with me. a'o mai - learn: check your ego at the door and realize that you do not know everything and that your brain is capable of so much more.  Learn about the people you work with and those you work for.  Learn all you can about education, instruction, new technology, anything that will keep your practice fresh.  Ho'ike - guide: We need to be a guide for those around us.  Acknowledge peoples' fears and worries, respect their knowledge and experience, appreciate the knowledge you have acquired and willingly guide the people around you to success.  'a'o aku - teach:  In the long run we need to teach people to fend for themselves.  We have to let them fail in order to be successful.  This is not just for students, but the adults involved as well - teachers, principals, parents, etc.  Teach for long term success.

Take a look at this provocative speech.  Children get it if we let them learn, guide, and teach.
The future of education?
